Welcome (back) to Astro Wisdom.
Today I’m going to talk about what makes a person eligible for liberation, and why.
But before I do that, I’d like to invite you to do some self-enquiry.
Do you find yourself searching for some answers about yourself such as the meaning of life, what’s your purpose in life, why you are having the experiences you’re having?
Do you swing between attachment and detachment from material things?
Does understanding the cycles of birth, death and rebirth amuse or interest you?
Take your time. No rush. I’m right here, haha.
Here’s what the Bhagwad Gita has to say about the eligibility factor for liberation.
The person who is not disturbed by happiness and distress, and is steady in both, is certainly eligible for liberation.
We all experience both happiness and distress - it’s a part of being a human. The problem arises when we look to material things, which can only bring us temporary happiness or pleasure, and become attached to them. The cyclical behavior only keeps growing. On a material level, we want the pleasures of the senses that come from things that one day will perish. This includes our bodies as well.
The kind of happiness or pleasure at the material level which distracts us from our spiritual path is actually making us disturbed.
In other words, material pleasures cannot fulfil us at the spiritual level. This is why practicing meditation helps us gain a balanced perspective on life. It calms the mind, which then helps control the senses and their pleasure-seeking tendencies. The continuous practice is what makes a soul determine through discernment.
Anyone who is steady in his determination of his/her advanced stage of spiritual realization and can equally tolerate the onslaught of happiness and distress is certainly a person eligible for liberation.
For instance, a ship is surrounded by water, just like we are surrounded by temptation in this material world. It is only when the water enters the ship that it starts to sink.
Through spiritual association and practices, you’re able to understand that your spirit is eternal. When you start to witness your life from the spiritual perspective, you understand that this material existence in this human body is temporary. Only the supreme God is eternal, to whom we belong.
